Home Design Inspiration: Travel

Finding real world design inspiration

You can find home design inspiration everywhere, but some of our best ideas come to us when we travel. The very idea of building a speakeasy in our home came to us after our epic trip to Fäviken in Sweden and The Library Bar in Copenhagen.

But you don’t have to cross the globe to get inspiration, sometimes a quick road trip can spark your curiosity or show you something unique to help you have an aha design moment. I have personally been really inspired by the authentic vintage vibe of Astoria and the modern murals in Portland, which is just a three-hour jaunt from Seattle.

In April, we took a trip to LA and were spotting #SpeakeasyStyle home design inspiration everywhere. From the art deco historic buildings in downtown LA to the hip mix of tiles at modern hotels. Our eyes were darting everywhere and we came home with a million new ideas.

We are now planning to paint a ceiling as part of an extended mural that goes from the walls up to the ceiling like this gorgeous mural at The Proper Hotel. I love how it feels like the mural is enveloping you in a big hug of a design.

Also, seeing the mix of vintage and modern on the streets of LA reminded us of how much we love mixing the old and the new with a hefty dose of color and glam. I can’t wait for our next trip to inspire a cool design idea we try out at our speakeasy.

Be sure to document everything that catches your attention and save in a folder on your phone to refer back to when you’re feeling stuck on a design challenge. Looking back at real world designs really helps!
